Isolation
Isolation sneaks up on us.  We can mask it with familiar props that are not in themselves bad.
We can isolate ourselves in an attempt to clean up our apartments (and then not do the cleaning);
we can isolate ourselves in churches or in sleep; we can use family, sweethearts, compulsive working, television.
The list is long.  The nicest way to end it is the way you and I do: together.   Reach out -- people can't read your mind.
Say ouch!  Someone hears.  Always.

- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 1], pp. 84-85

Thought to Ponder . . .

Review the Day
When we retire at night, we constructively review our day.  Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? . . .
What could we have done better? . . .
After making our review, we ask God's forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken.

- As Bill Sees It, p. 89

Thought to Ponder . . .
Every day is a gift.  That is why we call it the present.

Joannie here, and I’m an alkie for sure.  I love this topic for today.  I do review my day each night, it has become a habit to thank God for my day sober and for the gifts He has given me that day.  Sometimes those gifts are not my idea of good, but are given to me so I may learn to accept Life 101 as it is.  It keeps me on the humble side.  Just yesterday, I really had a super day.  I finally felt like I was going to live.  I've been so ill for so long and God tossed me a couple more little miracles.  I was so grateful for them.  Then what did I do last night?  While going through the day, I stared at the negatives of the day.  After about five minutes, I yelled out loud, "OK, Satan, be gone!  I don't need your negative input" and went back to my gratitude list and my inventory of the day.  I don't think I have amends to make today.  I made mine to my Higher Power last night -- He forgave me.  Today is a new slate; it is only 5:46am here in California, and I will do my darnedest to help someone else in whatever way I can.  Thanks for letting me share from my heart.  God bless.

Progression
The progression of this disease catapulted me into outer space.
An excess of chemical propellant overworked my sensory mechanism; like the crippled Apollo 13 spacecraft,
I was almost stranded on the dark side of the moon.  I could not manage the added power;
I was not able to control this by myself.
I needed a helping Hand, the spiritual reserve of a Higher Power.
I felt like a man in a tunnel with no opening at the other end, or like a driver wearing sunglasses at night.

Red Flags
Many years later, although alcohol is not part of my life and I no longer have the compulsion to drink,
it can still occur to me what a good drink tastes like and what it can do for me,
from my stand-at-attention alcoholic taste buds right down to my stretched out tingling toes.
As my sponsor used to point out, such thoughts are like red flags, telling me that something is not right,
that I am stretched beyond my sober limit.  It's time to get back to basic AA and see what needs changing.

Good News
I'm an alcoholic, sober today, thanks to my Higher Power and the fellowship and support of AA.
That's my good news for you.  It's not a very fancy statement.  There's a lot more that needs to be said --
words about my Higher Power, about the incredible love AA people have for one another, about struggling with the Steps,
about black battles with our own private demons.  Yes, it's a whole new way of life we're talking about.

"If"
Alcoholism respects no ifs.  It does not go away, not for a week, for a day, or even for an hour, leaving us nonalcoholic
and able to drink again on some special occasion or for some extraordinary reason --
not even if it is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, or if a big sorrow hits us, or if it rains in Spain, or the stars fall on Alabama.
Alcoholism is for us unconditional, with no dispensations available at any price.

Doing the right things for the right reasons -- this is my way of controlling my selfishness and self-centeredness.

I pray each day that I will avoid my previous actions, so that I will be helpful to others.

Gratitude
I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits.
When brimming with gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love,

Evening friends, I’m Susan, an alcoholic, grateful to be alive and sober.  I thought I would tell you about a woman I knew.  She was very self-centered and self-absorbed.  Everything was about her.  If the weather changed, it was about her.  If something was happening to someone else, it was about her too.  It didn't matter what was going on, somehow life was dealing her a poor hand indeed.  And then to top it off, she found out she was a drunk.  Well, heavens!  God was really putting her through the wringer.  Why her?  Over time though, something changed, and she realized she had been given a huge gift: the gift of finding a sense of peace and contentment in life.  She realized that God had carried her for so long when she could not carry herself.  Today, that woman is barely recognizable in the mirror.  Guess what?  Rarely is everything about her any more.  She wants to be of service to that Higher Power who granted her so much, and to help others if it be His will.  Now, that is something to be truly grateful for.  And indeed I am.  Thanks for listening.

Learn to Live
I spent most of my life worrying about myself, thinking that I was unwanted, that I was unloved.
I've learned since being in AA that the more I worry about me loving you,
and the less I worry about you loving me, the happier I'll be. . .
I have learned that the more I give, the more I will have; the more I learn to give, the more I learn to live.

Working the Program
Many of us found that the sooner we started work on the Twelve Steps
offered as a program of recovery in the book "Alcoholics Anonymous," the better.
Others of us felt the need to postpone this until we had been sober a little while.
The point is, there is no prescribed "right" way or "wrong" way.
Each of us uses what is best for himself or herself --
without closing the door on other kinds of help we may find valuable at another time.
And each of us tries to respect others' rights to do things differently.

I'm Deb G, an alcoholic.  My experience getting sober and working the Steps with my sponsor may not actually line up with another's experience.  My sponsor led me through the Big Book, and we worked the Steps as the Big Book states.  She sponsored me as she was sponsored, and she was a real, live breathing human being, too.  We laughed, we cried.  There were some lovely flourishes that were not strictly Big Book, like when I took the 3rd Step.  As I did the Third Step with her we were on our knees, facing one another, and holding hands as I voiced the 3rd Step prayer.  Now, the Big Book suggests we take this Step with someone trusted and that it's better to meet God alone than with someone who'll misunderstand.  The Big Book doesn't say anything about on knees or holding hands, but that was a lovely flourish I will treasure until the day I die.  I remember how the light streamed through the windows.  Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is 7+2=9, 5+4=9, 8+1=9, and we all end up at the same place =9!  So it makes me uncomfortable when someone points to my 3rd Step and says "Keep It Simple," "Don't complicate it," which, by the way, has been done.  We are here to share OUR experience.  Thanks.

The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution.
We have a way out on which we can absolutely agree,

This is the great news this book carries to those who suffer from alcoholism.

Having trouble with the First Step?  All the program asks is enough honesty to get started --
just what we are capable of at the moment.
At the beginning, that's very little honesty.  Each day, there will be a little more.  It will come.
Because, you see, the AA program works for anyone who wants it.

The Handshake
I stumbled up the steps and came into this room, and some guy was up front talking, but I couldn't hear what he said.
A couple of guys shook my hand.  Another one put his arm around my shoulder, and a third one gave me a cup of coffee.
These guys had never seen me before -- they didn't know me from a bag of beans -- but all of a sudden I felt they liked me.
An elementary thing, you say?  Of no importance?  Nonsense!
When you've been lost, lonely, forgotten, rejected, it's the most important thing in the world to have somebody shake your hand.
