Insecurity
The most common symptoms of emotional insecurity are worry, anger, self-pity, and depression.
These stem from causes which sometimes seem to be within us, and at other times to come from without.
To take inventory in this respect we ought to consider carefully all personal relationships
which bring continuous or recurring trouble.
It should be remembered that this kind of insecurity may arise in any area where instincts are threatened.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 52

Thought to Ponder . . .
Worry is negative meditation.

Willingness
Under the lash of alcoholism, we are driven to AA, and then we discover the fatal nature of our situation.
Then, and only then, do we become as open-minded to conviction and as willing to listen as only the dying can be.
We stand ready to do anything which will lift the merciless obsession from us.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 24

Thought to Ponder . . .
Life will take on new meaning.

Hi, I'm Maureen, an alcoholic, powerless over alcohol.  Why?  Because I am an Alcoholic.  Imagine that!  Something penetrated my thick skull when I got here, because God knows I am very hard-headed, stubborn, and used to be even worse.  But I was in the right place at the right time.  The wheels had already fallen off the bus, so I was not a happy camper out there.  Unfortunately, most of us have to come close to death to be as "willing to listen as only the dying can be," and many do not make it and/or make it back.  But if I had one, that was it -- the party was starting and over, all in the same breath.  I didn't realize it until I came to AA.  I never knew there was another way to live until I found it here.  If you are new or struggling today, please don't quit five minutes before the miracle.  Thank you.

Blindly rushing in to hack away at character defects will not speed recovery and may actually slow it down.

Unique
A frequent problem for an alcoholic is that he may think he's unique.
He can't believe others have had the same experiences, the same problems.  He thinks he's different.
Not me!  I think there are many like me, but they don't get heard.
Some of them may be listening for a sign that they, too, can belong.
Well if I can do it, anyone can do it.  And I do belong.  AA is my life.  Why shouldn't it be?
Before, I had only a sort of existence; I only thought I was living.  I was wrong.  AA gave me life.

Fear
The practice of AA's Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions in our personal lives
brought incredible releases from fear of every description,
despite the wide prevalence of formidable personal problems.
When fear did persist, we knew it for what it was, and under God's grace we became able to handle it.

- The Language of the Heart, p. 268

Thought to Ponder . . .

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
F E A R = False Events Appearing Real.

A Member Shares:
Good morning everyone, my name is Michael and I am an alcoholic.  As long as I can remember, even in early childhood, I was fearful.  Fear was my constant companion.  I was afraid of other children and new situations and felt so awkward.  When I discovered alcohol at age 11, the fear dissipated.  Alcohol made me feel like Superman; I was no longer awkward or afraid.  Alcohol served me well for many years.  Then, at the end it boomeranged.  Alcohol no longer worked; it magnified my fears and the nightmares and the fear of living overwhelmed me.  I was at the turning point ... either kill myself or live.  Thank God for AA.  When I become afraid today, it’s because I am living in the future and relying on myself.  If I do what the Big Book says, ask my Higher Power for help to remove the fear and call my sponsor, fear usually dissipates.  I like Step 11 to deal with fear too … let go and let God.  It works for me one day at a time.  Thank you.

Happiness
So happiness to me is fulfillment, the satisfaction gained
from knowing that you did the best your honestly evaluated limitations would permit
-- in all phases of living.
Happiness is gratitude for the miracle which granted another go-round at a life once abandoned.
Happiness is growing up.  It is recognizing all the things you really have.
Happiness is for experiencing, as well as remembering.

Authorities
Happily for us, we found we need no human authority whatever.  We have two authorities which are far more effective.
One is benign, the other malign.  There is God, our Father, who very simply says, "I am waiting for you to do my will."
The other authority is named John Barleycorn, and he says,
"You had better do God's will or I will kill you."  And sometimes he does kill.
So when the chips are down, we conform to God's will or perish.

Self-restraint
One unkind tirade or one willful snap judgment can ruin our relation with another person
for a whole day, or maybe a whole year.  Nothing pays off like restraint of tongue and pen.
We must avoid quick-tempered criticism and furious, power-driven argument.
The same goes for sulking or silent scorn.

Keeping It Simple
Simple, but not easy; a price had to be paid.  It meant destruction of self-centeredness.
I must turn in all things to the Father of Light who presides over us all.

Thought to Ponder . . .
While it isn't always easy, if I keep it simple, it works.

AA-related 'Alconym' . . .
K I S S = Keep It Serenely Simple.

A Member Shares:
I'm Ravi, an alcoholic.  The path to simplicity is not easy ... it is difficult.  The equation, E = Mc2 did not come to Einstein overnight.  It is a simple, elegant equation, but in order to arrive at it he had to know all of physics up until that time.  Similarly, for our founders there were very long periods of struggle.  Bill W. was on the verge of turning into a wet brain.  Through divine intervention he got some ideas; he felt he could pass on his recovery to others.  My point is nothing worthwhile in life comes overnight -- only disasters.  Anything that is worthwhile takes a lot of time and effort.  If we are unwilling to make that effort over time, how can we possibly enjoy the fruits of recovery?  Yes, I need to be simple in my actions.  AA is trail; a path out of alcoholic wilderness.  We have been invited to experience it ourselves.  The Steps are simple but not easy ... Trust God, Clean House, Help Others ... nothing could be simpler and yet so challenging.  Thanks.

Until I could honestly look at myself and see that I was the problem in many situations

Discovery
I figured why I'd been unsuccessful with sobriety in the past.  The answer was on page fifty-eight:
"Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program . . ."
My problem was not that I could not, because I knew I could; my problem was that I would not.
After this discovery, I commenced to follow the program as outlined in the Big Book, and for the first time,
I completely gave myself to this simple program.

Selfishness
Selfishness -- self-centeredness!  That, we think, is the root of our troubles.
Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity,
we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. . .
So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making . . .
Above all, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness.
We must, or it kills us!  God makes that possible.

I'm Jan, an alcoholic.  ARRGHHHHhhhhhhh!  That one still creeps up too easily.  It slinks around for too long before I kick the sucker out.  Even after years of sobriety, selfishness is still ingrained in the crevices of my brain.  Less now, yes, and I do have controls.  It only comes out and runs my show if I let it -- by not nipping away any part or all of "Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired" so ego cannot have its way with me!  Meetings and the constant unselfish support of invaluable AA friends have built up reserves of positive self-awareness -- the giving-self for the old taker-self that allows selflessness to take the place of selfishness.  No matter how I use it, AA makes a better person of me.  Thank you.

The First Step
The First Step and I have always been great friends.
I repeated it every five seconds and thanked God each day for my sobriety -- the only grace, maybe, for that day.
Gradually, I began to see another part of me emerging -- a grateful me, expecting nothing,
but sure that another power was beginning to guide me, counsel me, and direct my ways.  And I was not afraid. . .
The adversities, loneliness, sickness, losses, and disappointments mean nothing now.
I'm happy, because I came to believe -- not only in God, but in the goodness in everyone.

24-Hour Plan
Getting away from the pull of the first drink is like putting a space vehicle in orbit.
It takes a lot of thrust to overcome the initial pull of gravity and get the vehicle off the ground.
But once it gets in orbit, all that's required is a small correction from time to time.
That's how the 24-hour plan works --
a small daily checkup and corrections to keep us away from the pull of that first drink.
The 24-hour plan is a discipline whose yield is freedom.

Hi, I'm Jocelyn, an alcoholic.  My sponsor always says that giving to the basket is not required to be part of AA; only a desire to stop drinking is.  However, she also states that giving to the basket is a responsibility because this is what keeps the meetings going for those who enter the doors with the desire to stop drinking.  She then asked me what I would have done if the doors to AA weren't open.  What would I have done if AA didn't exist?  Where would I have gone?  Would I have gotten sober, or would I have just accepted my fate to be that I die drunk?  Then, she also asks me how much money did I spend on my booze?  It didn't matter if I was working or not, I always found a way to get my booze.  It didn't matter if I was down on my luck or not, there was always a way and, let me tell you, a bottle of booze costs a lot more than a dollar, and I drank a lot more than one bottle at a time.  So the other point she had hits home as well.  If I put that dollar in the basket every time I go to a meeting ... even if I go to meetings seven days a week … that's only thirty dollars a month.  I sure spent a heck of a lot more than that on booze.  And when my sponsor puts it like that with all the other factors together, it kind of makes me realize that my dollar in that basket at each meeting counts.  It also shows a commitment to my belief in this program which helped me to be here, and be able to help someone else after me.  Without that money in those baskets, there's no way to pay for the rent for the meeting rooms or for the literature that could save a person's life.  Many seem to think the basket is unimportant, and that the message is the only important thing.  The reality is that the message truly is the most important thing, but that basket has its place too.  Thanks for letting me share.

Hope
Hope is the priceless ingredient for recovery.  This, AA gives, most frequently not in mere words.
Upon the alcoholic's first contact with AA, as he looks around the room and sees men and women respectably clothed
and in their right minds, enjoying themselves, that flicker of hope begins to burn.
And he says to himself, "If those jokers can do it, I can."
The first need, beyond any other, is hope.  Without it, there is nothing.

Thought to Ponder . . .
Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.
