Power
I need power each day, because I get weary.
But with AA as my structure and God as my source of strength, I can face life without taking a drink.
The ocean and the sun and the trees and all the fantastic beauty that God has created have finally become very real to me.
I crave and need the presence of nature.
But I must also bear in mind that it is the spirit within me, which comes from God, that is going to be the healing force.
I can turn to it wherever I am.

- Came To Believe . . ., p. 103

Thought to Ponder . . .

Convincing Evidence
My abuse of alcohol was the exterior manifestation of a disease much more complex and consuming than simple drunkenness,
and similarly, my abstinence is the exterior manifestation of a wellness much more rewarding than simple sobriety.
The most convincing evidence I have today that I'm an alcoholic is not how much or how long I drank, nor how drunk I got;
the most convincing evidence I have is that Alcoholics Anonymous is working for me.

Prayer
Pray.  Whether you believe it or not, pray to a higher power.
If we were able to stay sober on our own power, we wouldn't be here tonight.
It takes a power greater than ourselves, and prayer is how we contact that higher power.
You can use a religious one or one of your own choosing.
If the God word bothers you, pray to an anonymous higher power or even "to whom it may concern."
In the morning, ask this Higher Power to keep you sober that day and thank him at night for each sober day.

Reprieve
We are not cured of alcoholism.
What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.
Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 85

Thought to Ponder . . .
The solution is simple.  The solution is spiritual.

Hi all. I'm Di, an alcoholic recovering one day at a time.  I’m always relieved to get what I consider to be the ‘cold, hard facts’ about my alcoholism.  I’ve learned that I am not, nor will I ever, be cured of this disease.  The Big Book also says so.  I can only stay sober one day at a time depending upon my spiritual condition.  That means I have to do certain things daily to keep that connection with my Higher Power.  For me, being in early recovery means a hyper-vigilance toward earning that contingency given by God on a daily basis.  I hope I always feel that way.  It’s simple: I do a few things and He takes away the obsession to have that first drink.  It’s simple, but not easy.  I have to do my part.  Surrender is a part of my daily life today because at first I had to, and now I still do.  Now, I truly love what God comes up with for my life.  Today I will continue to admit that I’m powerless, believe that God can and will relieve my insanity, and turn my will and life over to Him.  I need help today and will need help every day of my life.  I am not cured, and I’m certainly not in control.  It’s only that daily reprieve that will keep me sober today.  Without it, there is no successful alternative for me.  I must work the Steps, meditate, pray, help others ... or I drink.  Thanks for letting me share.

Loneliness
The simple act of getting in touch with AA that first time washed out in an instant
the dark loneliness that had encompassed my life.
When I fearfully crept into that old building that first day, I was greeted with a gentle invitation:
"Come on in.  Let's talk it over."
And everyone assured me I was not alone and need never be alone again.

Fellowship
We are people who normally would not mix.  But there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness,
and an understanding which is indescribably wonderful. . .
The feeling of having shared in a common peril is one element in the powerful cement which binds us.

Great News
The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution.
We have a way out on which we can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action.
This is the great news this book carries to those who suffer from alcoholism.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 17

A Member Shares:
I'm Charlie J., and I have Alcoholism.  I am a simple man.  I was when I was drinking, if I had what I thought was "enough" to drink, and then I was fine.  Tomorrow be damned!  I am still a simple man, today.  The great news for me about that attitude is that it has served me well getting and staying sober.  AA said I needed to find a Higher Power/God ... okay fine, I'll do that.  Why so simple?  Because nothing in my life worked and hadn't for a very, very long time.  I sure knew what was behind me when I sobered up.  There was disaster in every aspect of my life.  I was beaten down by a sickness I didn't even know I had: Alcoholism.  AA offered me a way out; a way up.  If I had to have a God, so be it.  When you are desperate and know you have hit bottom, many attitudes can change in a big hurry.  My spirituality is also simple.  I am not, after all, trying to get a seat closer to God when my appointed time comes.  I pray, and then I go about my day believing that a Higher Power or God will give me everything I need to not drink.  As far as the rest of life goes, if I have done my AA work well I can face any life problem with an attitude of, "What, if anything, can I do about this?"  And then I pray for a clear head and a path to do the right thing.  And let me just say that doing the right thing does not mean for me that the outcome will go my way.  It often means that it does not go my way and I need to make any and all, "adjustments" needed to get and stay on a firm spiritual footing.  For our new friends and our friends who may be coming back to AA, I welcome you and hope you keep coming with that all important "open mind."  It has been a life saver for me.  Sober questions are a good sign.  I think it says that we don't think we know it all.  "Keep It Simple."  Thank you.
