Perseverance
As we persist, a brand-new kind of confidence is born,
and the sense of relief at finally facing ourselves is indescribable.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 50

I'm Bobbie Jo, and I am an alcoholic.  "Perseverance!"  What came to mind instantly was never stopping on this sober journey of mine, no matter what.  I had a call from a family member who is now just over 30 days sober.  He'd thought about AA and sobriety and alcoholism a year ago.  I had done the same.  I had wondered about AA when I was 27 but did not come to AA until I turned 50.  That's a long time to drag my feet.  Now here we are at the beginning of this year, and I'm so glad to have a good spiritual foundation.  I never gave up.  It's true what the oldtimers shared in my local meetings that I never have to drink again.  What works for me is, of course, the Steps.  I attend meetings to hear what others have to share.  I've learned to use that dang 100-ton phone and call for help.  I can keep working it all.  Perseverance? Of course .. no matter what life tosses my way.  Thanks.

Difficulties
For pride, leading to self-justification, and always spurred by
conscious or unconscious fears, is the basic breeder of most
human difficulties, the chief block to true progress.

Fear
As we felt new power flow in, as we enjoyed peace of mind,
as we discovered we could face life successfully, as we became
conscious of His presence, we began to lose our fear of today,
tomorrow or the hereafter. We were reborn.

- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 63

Thought to Ponder . . .
When I approach a wall of fear, it usually turns out to be merely a waterfall.

Powerless
I am as powerless over alcohol as I am to turn back the waves of
the sea; no human force had the power to overcome my alcoholism.
Now I am able to breathe the air of joy, happiness and wisdom.

- Daily Reflections, p. 329

Thought to Ponder . . .
I am powerless, but not helpless.

I'm Eddie, an alcoholic. I am always going to be powerless over alcohol. The power I need to keep me sober comes from AA and God. I am also powerless over people, places, and things. The only thing I can change is me, my attitude and perspective. Because of AA and God, today I am not helpless. I can be a good husband to my wife, a good father to my two children, a good son to my mom, a good brother to my younger siblings, a good friend and a good employee. I have to always be active in AA and working the steps to maintain this. Thanks for letting me share.

Unmanageability
The First Step says, "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol -- that our lives had become unmanageable."
This didn't say we had to be in jail, ten, fifty, or one hundred times. It didn't say I had to lose one, five, or ten jobs.
It didn't say I had to lose my family. It didn't say I had to finally live on skid row and drink bay rum, canned heat, or lemon extract.
It did say I admitted I was powerless over alcohol -- that my life had become unmanageable. . .
It wasn't how far I had gone, but where I was headed.

- - Alcoholics Anonymous . . ., p. 354

Thought to Ponder . . .
Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

Hope and Dignity
I stumbled through the doors of AA in disgrace, expecting nothing from life, and I have been given hope and dignity.
Miraculously, the only way to keep the gifts of the program is to pass them on.

- Daily Reflections, p. 62

Thought to Ponder . . .
In AA, we discover that it is impossible to give without receiving, or receive without giving.

A New Beginning
I knew I had to have a new beginning, and this beginning had to be here.  I had to let go of the past and forget the future.
As long as I held on to the past and grabbed at the future with the other hand, I had nothing to hold on to today with.
So I had to begin here, now.

- - Came To Believe . . ., p. 46

Thought to Ponder . . .
There are no endings ... only new beginnings.
