Forgiveness
I must forgive injuries, not just in words, or as a matter of form, but in my heart.
I do this not for the other persons' sake, but for my own sake.
Resentment, anger, or a desire to see someone punished, are things that rot my soul.
Such things fasten my troubles to me with chains.
They tie me to other problems that have nothing to do with my original problem.

- Daily Reflections, p. 88

Thought to Ponder . . .
Forgiveness of others is a gift to yourself.

Selfishness
Selfishness -- self-centeredness!  That, we think, is the root of our troubles.
Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate.
Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we invariably find that at some time in the past
we have made decisions based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt.

Cured?
I was cured.  Three years later I found that there is no cure.  I had forgotten that I am an alcoholic. . .
I've learned once more that the decision as to whether I lead a life of repeated wrong steps
and steady declination of reputation and character, or a life whereby I gain respect from others
and consequently regain my own self-respect, boils down to the one choice:
whether or not I take that first drink.

Letting Go
If I let go, I thought, then I wouldn't be anybody.  Well, who was I, anyway?  Just a willful, alcoholic woman.
Now I'm beginning to see that letting go doesn't mean giving up.  It means opening myself to new vistas.
There have been moments of what I would call ecstasy.  I'm thrilled and I'm scared at the same time.

- Came To Believe . . ., p. 41

Thought to Ponder . . .
Get a grip on letting go.

I'm Peyton and I'm a grateful alcoholic.  Believing in God has never been difficult for me.  Believing He could do things that were miraculous also wasn't difficult to believe, or to see in other people.  I just somehow had missed how truly relying on God, as I understood Him, would work in my life was all about.  Maybe I wasn't ready to see it; it really doesn't matter now.  In AA, I've learned, and continue to learn, that when I give my life to God, and try to do His will rather than my own, life works out a lot better for me.  I see it in you all who are living this programme and practicing it in all your affairs.  And I experience it, feel it, see it, and believe it, when I let go and have faith that God will work out all to my best whether I understand it or not.  Thanks for showing me how it works, and that it does work if I work it.

Willfulness
And so I "made a decision" to turn my will and my life over to the care of God as I understood Him. . .
I am not saying that for me the Third Step has been completed.
My willfulness is still very much a part of me and may always be a stumbling block to progress in my life.
So I will have to stay very close to AA, where my strength lies.
I am so full of human frailty that I think it is a miracle I am here today at all.  It's only through AA.

Courage
Having come to believe that I keep what I share, every time I encourage, I receive courage.
It is with others that, with the grace of God and the Fellowship of AA, I trudge the road of happy destiny.
May I always remember that the power within me is far greater than any fear before me.
May I always have patience, for I am on the right road.

Rose here, an alcoholic.  When I very first started figuring out just how bad my problem was, I turned to the Internet.  This room in particular was my first real dose of AA.  I learned so much from each and every one of you.  Just words on a screen?  It was a whole lot more than that.  With enough encouragement here, I finally dragged myself into face-to-face meetings and learned even more there.  But my communication started right here, as well as my recovery.  I could not be more grateful for this room.  Thank you for being a huge part of my sobriety.
