Dealing With Defects
If we ask, God will certainly forgive our derelictions.  But in no case does He render us white as snow
and keep us that way without our cooperation.
That is something we are supposed to be willing to work toward ourselves.
He asks that we try as best we know how to make progress in the building of character.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 65

Thought to Ponder . . .
If I want God to remove my character defects, I'll have to stop doing them.

Hi everyone, I am Kevin, an alcoholic and a member of AA.  Sometimes, l feel that l live in a constant state of Steps Six and Seven, always taking those crazy character defects out of my toy box to play with.  Just the other day l noticed that l was playing with a few.  Identifying sometimes can be a challenge, but l soon did so through prayer and meditation.  Once l realized that my character defects were complicating my life, l was ready to have God remove these defects and then humbly asked Him to remove them.  The next day l woke up feeling oh! so much better and willing to do the next right thing.  The feeling of serenity returned.  Thanks so much for letting me share with you and showing me this truly does work.

Believe
Some of us come to believe almost instantly; others take weeks or months; still others take years.
There is no set timetable, and there is no reason to feel guilty over inability to accept the Second Step immediately,
with all its ramifications.  On the other hand, though. . .
if we ignore it or kick it under the rug and hope it goes away, we cut the spiritual heart out of the program.

- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 2], p. 138

Thought to Ponder . . .
I came; I came to; I came to believe.

Action
My AA way of life now demands constant action --
an active self-honesty and recognition of the necessity for living in day-tight compartments.
Patience must be practiced.  In gratitude, I must humbly come to believe every moment of every day.
Each day, I must surrender and rededicate my life, or I shall lose all that I have gained.  I have always believed in God,
but I must never forget how easy it is to lose contact and to become again "unsane."

- Came To Believe . . ., p. 96

Thought to Ponder . . .
Grateful is a feeling.  Gratitude is an action.

Anger
If we were to live, we had to be free of anger.  The grouch and the sudden rage were not for us.
Anger is the dubious luxury of normal men, but for us alcoholics it is poison.

Thought to Ponder . . .
Anger is the wind that blows out the light of reason.

Incurable
We remember we have an incurable, potentially fatal ailment called alcoholism.
And instead of persisting in drinking, we prefer to figure out, and use, enjoyable ways of living without alcohol.
We need not be ashamed that we have a disease.  It is no disgrace.
No one knows exactly why some people become alcoholics while others don't.  It is not our fault.
We did not want to become alcoholics.  We did not try to get this illness.

- Living Sober, p. 9

Thought to Ponder . . .
Sobriety is not a destination, but an everlasting journey.

Dry Drunk
Perhaps, in the last analysis, a dry drunk is mostly a childish tantrum, an interval of immaturity,
a regression to those frantic days of self-will run riot.
Nevertheless, it can still be a perilous period for the alcoholic struggling for recovery.
I know that there have been dark days when a will greater than my own has been responsible for my sobriety.

- The Best of the Grapevine [Vol. 1], p. 20

Thought to Ponder . . .
Without change I am just a non-drinking drunk.

Sanity
"Sanity" is defined as "soundness of mind."  Yet no alcoholic, soberly analyzing his destructive behavior,
whether the destruction fell on the dining-room furniture or his own moral fiber, can claim "soundness of mind" for himself.
Therefore, Step Two is the rallying point for all of us.
Whether agnostic, atheist, or former believer, we can stand together on this Step.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 33

Thought to Ponder . . .
I sit at a meeting until the bus of sanity comes by; then, I climb aboard.
